Horticultural Service Certificate 2012:
It is our pleasure to present this award to a very deserving couple. They are always there when called on to help in whatever way they can. These are a few of the things they so willingly help with: Planting, weeding, watering & removal of plants around town. They set up, take down & remove material from the plant & bake sale, Festival of Flowers and any other event we put on. They help in the kitchen, donate food to the kitchen, are always ready to set up for a meal & to be there to help with clean up. They always donate to the auctions where Marg's jams are highly sought after.
This year’s Service Certificate is deservedly presented to:
Margaret & Alex McMurray.

Port Elgin PumpkinFest 2012: Jeff Warner's Results:
This year (2012) was a good growing season for me and I had two good pumpkins so I thought I would take them both this year. At pumpkinfest they have a weighoff on Saturday which attracts most of the biggest pumpkins in the province(world). The Saturday weigh off is the one that I have always gone to and got beaten pretty badly but enjoy myself and learn lots. They
always have another weigh off on Sunday but the pumpkins are usually a little smaller.
This year, on the Saturday my pumpkin weighed in at 1113 lbs which is my first time to 1000 lbs. It got me 8th place out of 27. I was very happy with that. My sunflower got me 2nd measuring about 21 1/2' and a pear gourd was 121 lbs to get me a 3rd in the any other heaviest category. I had a great day. On the Sunday, my pumpkin weighed in at 1347 lbs to win heaviest for the day. I was thrilled to win. My other sunflower got 2nd again and I had a carrot weigh 8.9 lbs to get a first in the any other category. This was an even better day! Festival of Flowers 2012: "Songs From The Garden"
Another annual flower show has come and gone, and what a successful show it was! Despite the June/July drought, the watering restrictions, and the ever adaptable and hungry insect pests, the Englehart and District Horticultural Society members dug deep, and put together a wonderful display of garden produce, floral designs, and photography. Judges Kees Stryland, Becky Hughes, Charlie Warner, Pat Groulx, Rosemary Campbell, and Annette Desilets-McCarthy had difficult jobs choosing the winners in each category as the quality of exhibits was very high. Beautiful hand-made bookmarks were given out at the door to appreciative visitors. The number of visitors was quite a bit higher this year, thanks to great weather and a wonderful job of advertising by Bruce Wilson. A group of members made lovely give-away flower arrangements which were drawn for throughout the show. Linda Murray had put together a lovely sitting area for people to enjoy and relax in. Twyla Wilson set up a very large and successful Silent Auction. The committee would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to put on such a successful show, and to all the exhibitors, a special vote of thanks for all of the work you did to make our 56th annual Festival of Flowers the success that it was. -Submitted by Eileen Fisher, Convenor

Giant Yard Sale: May 2012
The Englehart and District Horticultural Society held its first Yard Sale on Saturday, May 26 at the homes of Bonnie Warner, and Dawna and John Beausoleil. Thanks to all whohelped to set up for the sale on Friday, including Sharon Black, Bruce Wilson, Claudette Black, Jean Bott, Vi Tucker, Marg McMurray, Claudette Black, Joyce Smith, Irene Bond, and Eileen Fisher. They worked for hours through the rain, smoky air, and very strong winds to set the sale up. On Saturday, Jean Bott, Carol Heaslip, Irene Bond, Vi Tucker, Bruce and Twyla Wilson, Linda Murray, Sharon Black, Joyce Smith, Bonnie Warner, Dawna Beausoleil, and Eileen sold to the many happy customers, then spent a lot of time packing things away an delivering borrowed articles.
Thanks to Dalton Black for helping us take the sale down, to everyone who donated items, to Bonnie and the Beausoleils for the use of their yards and garages, to the workers who staffed the sale, to Verley Lamb who lent us signs and aprons, to Joyce Smith for getting the float and dealing with the money, to Bruce for the advertising, and to all those who purchased articles. In total, we spent about 140 hours of volunteer work time for the Society. Many hands make light work, and extra money for the Society to spend on worthy projects!
