Annual Christmas Workshop
"Holiday Swag"
Wed. Nov. 28, 2018
We started the Holiday season right with the annual Christmas Workshop! This year the construction was a Holiday Swag which can be used to decorate a wall or door for the holiday season! The basement of the Presbyterian Church was all set up for our annual Christmas Workshop creating a wonderful smell...white pine, red pine, cedar, and ground hemlock. Carrie Anne Field, the convenor, had made all the arrangements for a beautiful door decoration. Only 50 kits were made at a cost of $15.00 and it was on a first come, first served basis. There was also a delicious lunch after and plenty of time to socialize with friends and "neighbours"!

District 12 Northeastern Ontario Annual Meeting
Sat., April 28, 2018
Timmins, ON.
"From the Ground Up"
A full day of meetings, workshops and competitions with wonderful and interesting guest speakers at a very reasonable cost. Lunch, coffee breaks, etc. were supplied. Here is a report from Eileen Fisher:
"We enjoyed a great day in Timmins Yesterday (but not the ride as far as Kenogami...it was a nightmare ...thanks Bonnie for getting us through). We missed Barbara Curran, as she was unable to make it to Englehart because of the roads. The Timmins Society did a fabulous job of hosting- the snacks and lunch were delicious, the hall was decorated nicely, the silent auction was wonderful, there were lots of free door prizes, the competitions were well entered (we won a first prize for our monthly newsletter and a second on the poster we entered). Kees Stryland of the Timmins Society and Timmins Council rep, Mike Doody brought greetings from the town. The business meeting in the a.m. went smoothly, with a report from Ginny Montminy on the Bursary, a report on the website from Rick was read, Treasurer Kathy Buller gave her financial report, OHA rep Charles Freeman spoke to us about the role of the Ontario Horicultural Association and its past year's events, Director Anne Jamieson spoke on the events in District 12, and I gave the Nominating report. Charles Freeman, OHA representative responsible for the northeast area of the province, ran the elections. Anne was re-elected as District Director, Peggy MacIntyre of KL will be First Assistant Director, and Billie Rheault of Porcupine will be Second Assistant. Kathy Buller returns as Treasurer, Ginny Montminy and Amy Vickery-Menard will be the Bursary co-chairs, Rick Heaslip will continue as Webmaster, and I will continue as Nominating Committee chair. After a delicious lunch, the meeting, which followed the theme 'From the Ground Up', continued with a presentation on 'Herb Spirals' by Katrina Pelchet. This way of gardening was new to all of us. Unfortunately, the computer system she and the next speaker were going to use to show us photos did not work but Katrina did a good job on explaining. Next, Harri Ollila, husband of Sharon Minnett Ollila, spoke to us on the topic 'Reclaiming the Land', and was an interesting and passionate speaker on the topic of how the mining industry is working to improve on past mistakes and should be held accountable all over the world for their work. He also was unable to show his slides but did a great job of speaking to and informing us about the topic. The afternoon concluded with a demonstration by Vicki Lodovici of The Love Bug florist shop. Vicki gave hints and tips for handling floral material and designing, and put together an amazing bouquet of mixed flowers that was packed full of various foliage, lots of roses, and at least four stems of gorgeous orchids! This beautiful arrangement was given to long time Iroquois Falls gardeners, Sonia and Louis Fortier. Check out the photos of the day posted below. Thanks to the Englehart and District Horticultural Society for sending us and to Bonnie Howard Warner for so bravely driving us through some pretty horrible weather!"

Annual Meeting: Jan.17, 2018
Our Annual Meeting was a busy and interesting time. Deborah Murray did a great job as hostess of the meeting. The potluck supper was a great success, with a wide variety of delicious food. President Rosemary Campbell delivered her report and remarked on the importance that the Society has had in her life. Secretary Bonnie Howard Warner had prepared the annual report booklet, which outlines the work done by the Society in 2017, and delivered by First Vice, Jean Bott. This is a huge job and we thank Bonnie for the hours of work. Jean also presented the Forecast for 2018 prepared by Second Vice, Kelly Brownlee. Treasurer Ginny Montminy presented the annual Financial Report and we discovered that we really did spend a large amount of money in the community last year! Thanks to these three woman for their efforts. Carrie Anne Field delivered the Nominating Committee report for this year and Twyla Wilson ran the elections for the coming year. Thanks, Carrie Anne and Twyla. The Directors of the Society are elected each year and we are pleased that two more members chose to join us. We welcome Evelyne Nemcsok and Barbara Curran as our new Directors. We enjoyed the slide presentation by Carrie Anne Field, which took us to four European countries. Thanks, Carrie Anne. All in all, it was a very successful Annual Meeting. (E. Fisher, R. Heaslip)
