Christmas Workshop: November 2011
The Englehart and District Horticultural Society hosted its 37th annual Christmas Craft evening in Pioneer Hall on November 30th. This evening is open to the public and about 40 people attended, making lovely twig basket centerpieces with pine, cedar, cones, ribbons, etc. Convenor Rosemary Campbell did an excellent job of demonstrating, and the Social Committee convenor Mary Schippers and her helpers provided delicious snacks. It was a pleasant beginning for the festive season for all who attended.
Decorating For Christmas: November 2011 with Amber:
At the November General Meeting, members of the Englehart and District Horticultural Society once again enjoyed a visit from Amber and Patsy, of Amber’s in New Liskeard. The ladies demonstrated several simple, yet elegant floral designs, and brought an evening of great entertainment to those at the meeting. Several visitors from Kirkland Lake joined the Englehart Society for the presentation.

Chamber of Commerce: 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award (Bruce Wilson)
I am pleased to write this letter asking you to consider Mr. Bruce Wilson as a candidate for the honour of
receiving the Chamber of Commerce’s 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award. I have worked with Bruce for many years in a variety of organizations and have come to admire and depend upon his commitment to his community, his tremendous work ethic, and the quiet but determined method which Bruce uses to achieve his goals.
Englehart and District Horticultural Society
I have mainly worked with Bruce through the Englehart an District Horticultural Society. Bruce has been an active member of the Englehart and District Horticultural Society for many years. Shortly after joining the Society, Bruce became a member of the Board of Directors, and became Second Vice President in 1993. In 1995 Bruce became President of the Society and completed a two year term in this office. Both before this time, and since, Bruce has been an indispensable member of the Society. He has since served a second two-year term, as President from 2005 to2006. He currently holds the position of First-Vice President.
Bruce has been convenor of many committees, such as Programme. As Programme convenor, Bruce has been
responsible for bringing many educational speakers and workshops to the town of Englehart. He has also served the Society in the position of Civic Improvement Chairperson. As such, Bruce has been responsible for planning and overseeing the
planting and maintenance of the many gardens which the society cares for, all for the beautification of our community.
Bruce has also been responsible for planning and overseeing our annual Festival of Flowers, Spring Into Summer Barbeque, where society members answer questions on gardening posed by members of the public, Publicity, and Horticultural Week, a week in June where the Society brings the importance of horticulture to the attention of the town’s citizens. As well as being head of many committees, Bruce has also given of his time to sit as a committee member to help plan important society events.
The Englehart and District Society, and the entire community of Englehart has benefitted in immeasurable ways from the generosity and community-mindedness of Bruce Wilson.
District 12 Northeastern Ontario Horticultural Association:
Shortly after becoming an active member in the Englehart and District Horticultural Society, Bruce became involved in the District 12 Northeastern Horticultural Association. This organization serves the horticultural societies in northeastern Ontario, from Kapuskasing in the north, to the Nipissing area in the south. Bruce was elected to the position of District Director in April 1995, and served in this capacity until 2000. As District Director, Bruce represented all of the horticultural society members in northeastern Ontarioat Ontario Horticultural Association meetings and other events. He also organized and ran Annual Meetings held throughout the north, as well as attending society functions from Kapuskasing to North Bay. As
District Director, Bruce was responsible for overseeing all of the business of District 12, bringing educational speakers and programmes to the north, and was a welcome speaker himself at many northern societies. Though no longer District Director, Bruce has remained very active in the organization in his role as Past District Director, and has been an invaluable aid to the current executive. He currently serves the District as in the position of Treasurer.
Ontario Horticultural Association
Bruce became involved with this, the umbrella organization of all horticultural societies in Ontario, during his years of service to the Englehart and District Horticultural Society. As well as representing his own district at Ontario Horticultural Society meetings throughout the province, Bruce became involved in O.H.A. committees, such as the Newsletter and Internet committees. In 1999, Bruce was elected to the position of Second Vice-President and was elected as President of the Ontario Horticultural Association in June 2001, a position he held until June 2002. Bruce was only the second northerner to achieve this position, the first being Mrs. Ruby Bryan, also of Englehart. He was responsible for organizing and overseeing all of the Ontario Horticultural Association’s meetings and programmes during his term, including the planning of the Annual Convention in Sault Ste. Marie in June 2002. He was always a wonderful ambassador for the north, and for Englehart in particular, encouraging others to visit his home town and area.
International Plowing Match 2009
Bruce was an integral part of this huge undertaking, and worked hard for the years of his involvement to bring recognition to and pride in our area. He was chairperson of the Horticultural Tent and as such was responsible for the overall set-up o the tent and the planning of all of the activities which took place. For months, Bruce’s life revolved around this huge undertaking and he helped prove that we in the north can do whatever we set our minds to.
Englehart and District Agricultural Society
Bruce has long been involved with the Englehart Agricultural Society. He has held many positions as a director, indeed he has served for 25 years as a director of the Society, and has served on the executive several times. He currently holds the position of Secretary-Treasurer. He has also attended many Agricultural Society functions throughout the province, representing the town of Englehart At Fall Fair time, Bruce is always there to set up the Fair, take down the Fair, and do many, many jobs that are imperative to have a successful fair.
Involvement in the above organizations are just some of the ways that Bruce Wilson has given of himself for the betterment of his community, indeed of his province. I believe that he would be an excellent candidate to receive the recognition that would be afforded by receiving your organization’s award and hope that you will give consideration to Mr. Bruce Wilson when deciding upon a candidate to receive the Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Yours truly,
