Youth Garden Competition
Our society has sponsored a youth garden competition for at least 12 years and this year was one of
the most popular. We had 16 keen children from the Englehart area who planted and tended
gardens as part of the society's Youth Garden Competitions. In August, judges Lois Dekker and
Judy Brownlee visited the gardens and were pleased with the efforts of the children this summer.
The result of the judging is as follows:
JK/SK 1st: Sierra Denomme and Brynn Warner 2nd: Liezl and Steve Nemecsok
Grade 1-3 1st: Haley Schenk 2nd: Kyra Shearing, Makayla MacPherson and Chase Hamilton
3rd: Olivia Nemecsok and Caleb Schenk
Grade 4-8 1st: Aaron Mowbray 2nd: Aiden MacPherson and Nate Hamilton 3rd: Rhys and
Annalee Robertson.
Thank you to the entrants for all their hard work, to the adults who encouraged them, and to the
judges who gave up their time to judge the gardens. As we have learned, planting and tending their
own garden instills in children a sense of responsibility and pride in their work. More pictures of individual gardens BELOW!

New records for Jeff Warner!
Congratulations to our own Jeff Warner for his excellent showing in the Port Elgin Pumpkinfest. Jeff placed 7th in all of Ontario with his giant pumpkin, which weighed 1245 lbs.; 1st with his carrot at 12.36 lbs., a Canadian record; 1st with his cabbage at 36.14 lbs.; 1st with his celery at 43.14 lbs. An incredible showing and proof positive that we can grow 'em big in the north! Well done, Jeff!
In Memoriam
Gwendolyn Colquhoun
Past President: Englehart & District Horticultural Society
With profound sorrow, Bud Colquhoun announces the passing of his beloved wife Gwen on December 1, 2017 at the Englehart & District Hospital with her husband of 64 years and friend Dr. Lynn Lacasse by her side. Gwen's struggle with cruel dementia has ended. It had robbed her of her memory and her dignity, but not her spirit. Survived by sister-in-law Shirley Colquhoun, niece Lynda Fisher and cousin Marlene Greif. Predeceased by parents Walter Fisher and Elsie (Greif) Fisher and brothers Carson Fisher and Owen Fisher, Gwen spent her entire life in Englehart, graduating from Englehart High School and later (1984) from Laurentian University with a BA in English Literature and Sociology and a special certificate in Women's Studies.
During her lifetime Gwen was deeply involved in her community, including as leader of Canadian Girls In Training (CCIT), hospital Candy Stripers, secretary United Church Women (UCW), United Church choir, secretary Englehart Art Club, president Horticultural Society, Temiskaming Speaker and Northern Daily News correspondent, Secretary Chamber of Commerce, Assistant Curator / Manager Englehart & Area Historical Museum, Board member of Museum, Englehart Playhouse Theatre director, Chair of Englehart Library Board and President of Friends of Library Group. She was especially proud of her time as Library Board Chair during conception and building of the present Library.
Gwen was an accomplished self taught artist and a published author. She loved to travel, touching down with her husband in countries including Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Yugoslavia, Morocco, England and Scotland as well as many winter sojourns in Florida and a memorable trip to Arizona. She loved Christmas, antique shows, auction sales, reading history and her Shepherd Lake cottage. Gwen was a talented decorator with innate colour perception and awareness of correct decor. Many United Church events and Library window displays benefited from her artistic talents. She was of inestimable help and support to Bud in their post-retirement auction business.
Special thanks to Dr. Marie Lynn Lacasse, Nurse Practitioner Sylianne Desilets and the entire Hospital staff - medical, nurses, personal care workers, kitchen staff, housekeeping and office - all of whom were exceptionally considerate in taking care of Gwen.
Donations if desired, would be appreciated for the Library, Museum elevator fund or Englehart & District Hospital. Gwen was loved more than she ever knew. She was made for brighter things, for better times and laughter. No funeral services or memorials. Friends are asked to remember her each in their own way. Condolences, contributions and memorial candles may be left at www.mcdonaldfuneralhome.ca.

Christmas Workshop: November 29
Photos courtesy of E. Fisher.
What a great evening we enjoyed tonight at the annual Christmas Workshop spnsored by the society. This event is open to the public and always involves using natural material to make a beautiful decoration. This year we made yule logs of birch, with pine, cedar, and Canada yew for greenery, a candle, silk poinsettias, white tipped red pine cones, a small white deer or coloured bird, and some ribbon and artificial berries. A great group came out to support the Society and to have some fun making a lovely Christmas centerpiece. We had people from as far away as Latchford and Kirkland Lake! Best of all, when we had finished our artistic endeavours, we enjoyed an amazing luncheon provided by Social convenor Mary Schippers and her helpers. Thanks to the committee, Bonnie Howard Warner, Joyce MarieSmith, and Carrie Anne Field for your hours of work, to my dear husband, Leonard for his hours of work, cutting and drilling, and to Mary Schippers and Bruce andTwyla Wilson, and all who helped out in the kitchen and at clean up time! (Report by E. Fisher) Ed. note: Thanks go to Eileen for demonstrating and leading the participants through all the steps for this project!

Fall Planning Meeting: Iroquois Falls, Sept. 30, 2017
Here are some pics from the District 12 Fall Planning Meeting in Iroquois Falls. For those of you who are new to the Horticultural Society, the societies from Kapuskasing, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Timmins, Porcupine, Kirkland Lake, and Englehart are all members of the District 12 area of the province. We meet each fall to plan for the next year's large Annual Meeting, which next year will be in Timmins. We choose a theme, suggest workshops/speakers, etc. We also conduct the business of the District, hear reports of past activities that have happened during the past months. Four of us represented the Englehart Society- Ginny Montminy, she is co-chair of the District 12 bursary committee (we give an annual bursary to a student from the area going into Horticulture or Environment Studies in college or university), Rosemary Campbell, our society's President, Bruce Wilson, and Eileen Fisher, both past District Directors. It was a great day to reunite with friends from around the District. The theme for the Annual Meeting in Timmins on Sat. April 28 will be "From the Ground Up".

Englehart Horticultural Week
June 10 to 17, 2017
It was Horticultural Week in the Englehart area June 10 to 17th... a time to get out into our yards and gardens, to plant some flowers and/ or vegetables, to tend to your houseplants, to help a neighbour or a child put in a garden, to do something positive for the environment, or just to take a walk and admire the beauty of our area. Members of the Englehart and District Horticultural Society were out and about, planting gardens at the Legion Hall, the cenotaph, and the park, as well as engaging with school children in horticultural events, and other activities. Gardening hints as well were broadcast on CJBB. Thanks to Convenor, Deb Murray, for co-ordinating Hort Week events! (Click on pictures below to enlarge)

Spring Plant & Bake Sale
What an amazing morning it was for the Englehart and District Horticultural Society! By 9:30 the line reached from the door to the street. At 10:00 in they came and the craziness ensued... good craziness, though! By 10:20, well over half of the plants were gone and much of the delicious baking. People seemed happy with their purchases, which are always priced to make a gardener smile. It was wonderful to see so many young people there today, with lots of children shopping as well. By 11:00 it was all over but for the latecomers, who still enjoyed great bargains. By 11:15 we were cleaning up! (E. Fisher) Many thanks to those who contributed baking or plants, bought articles at the sale or helped with setting up and cleaning up!
