Horticultural Week 2021 Photo Challenge
During the week of June 13 to 19th, the Society under the guidance of Evelyne Nemcsok encouraged Members of the EDHS Facebook page to submit photos in several categories! The response was overwhelming and very difficult to sort! As a compromise, this webmaster has created a gallery of photos in random order! (You might have fun trying to decide in which categories [Day] the photos were submitted!) Apologies in advance for photos that were missed! :)

In Memoriam
Lifetime Member Wilda Rowlandson
Wilda Rowlandson passed away peacefully at home on April 21, 2021 in her 94th year. She will be greatly missed by her children: Bob (Sue), Laurie (Linda), Daryl (Lynne), Sharen (Keith), Mike (Judy), Marie (Rob) and David (Sally); grandchildren: Rob, Pete, Jeff, Karen, Tracy, Shannon, Tony, Christie, Kara, Darren, Mitchell, Wesley and Molly and 15 great-grandchildren. Wilda is also survived by her brothers, Jahz and Sam and sister, Gaynelle and joins Harold, Donnie, Sheila and Lucy in heaven.
While she was each of our greatest fan, her first love was to God and her Saviour. Wilda was an active member of her community and church. A lifetime member of the Englehart Horticultural Society, she continued to take pleasure simply sitting on her patio and listening to rustling leaves. Wilda was a fervent word search puzzler, virtual Jeopardy contestant and reader. Her quiet participation and love for others made Englehart better. She was a former Evanturel Township Senior Honour Roll recipient, member of the Wheelchair Bus Fund, Friends of the Library, Figure Skating Executive and faithful church organist for many years.
A long-time resident of Englehart, Wilda grew up in Napanee and, in 1960, courageously left her Toronto teaching career to marry Harold and join his band of six in the North. Her immediate and extended family and countless friends of all ages are blessed to have had her in our lives.
If desired, the family requests contributions in Wilda’s memory be to the Englehart Horticultural Society via McDonald’s Funeral Home. Online comments and stories are welcomed. No service will take place; however, we hope to celebrate Wilda’s life this summer.
Condolences, contributions and memorial candles may be left at www.mcdonaldfuneralhome.ca.

Ontario Delivering Support to Agricultural and Horticultural Societies
Funding will help offset lost revenue from cancelled fall fairs and exhibits
WOODSTOCK - The Ontario government is providing $5 million to support the province's Agricultural and Horticultural Societies impacted by the pandemic. The funding is flowing through the Agricultural and Horticultural Support and Recovery Funding Initiative.
Programming details were announced today by Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association annual general meeting.
"Agricultural and horticultural societies play a vital role in agricultural education while making significant contributions to the economy of rural Ontario," said Minister Hardeman. "This funding will help support these societies during a difficult period so they can operate future fall fairs and exhibits and participate in our future economic recovery."
Societies have been unable to hold revenue generating events over the past 10 months due to health and safety concerns around COVID-19.
This one-time initiative features two funding streams:
"The Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS), is grateful for the support from the Ontario Government," said Vince Brennan, Manager, Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies. "Their investment shows the confidence and appreciation the government has for Ontario Agricultural Societies and their impact, especially during these challenging times. This funding will help support our Agricultural Societies and their communities."
"On behalf of the 273 societies/clubs of the Ontario Horticultural Association, we extend our gratitude for your generous financial support," said Katharine Smyth, President, Ontario Horticultural Association. "As you know, the societies/clubs have seen reduced membership numbers and have been unable to raise funds to continue their community involvements. Your consideration and response to their needs during the pandemic, by way of providing them extra finances will go a long way to support them through this crisis."
Agricultural and horticultural societies have played a critical role in educating Ontarians on the importance of agriculture for more than a century. Supporting this sector at this time will ensure the long traditions and economic contributions of the societies will not be lost as the province recovers from the impacts of COVID-19

This one-time initiative features two funding streams:
- $1.8 million Base Support Funding will provide eligible agricultural societies with $7,000, and eligible horticultural societies with $1,140 in funding to support their continued delivery of agricultural and horticultural education across Ontario.
- $3.2 million Hardship Funding for eligible agricultural societies will provide additional support, which will be based on their reported gate receipts from 2019. This will help off-set operating losses, liabilities, and fixed overhead costs.

2020 YOUTH GARDEN COMPETITION RESULTS
E. Fisher reports "Each summer, the Englehart and District Horticultural Society hosts a "Youth Garden Competition" and this year was no exception. The idea behind this activity was to encourage young people to become involved in what is a wonderful activity to challenge youngsters. It can also become a lifelong interest, even a passion This year was a great year to have something ongoing to challenge our young people as there wasn't much oppertunity to be social. Once again, we are grateful to the two judges who give up hours of their time to visit the gardens. Thank you so much Dorothy
de Champlain and Lois Dekker who gave up many hours to visit each garden and gardener. They have done this job for many years and we are so indebted to them! The ladies were very happy with the efforts of our young gardeners this year. Due to the Covid 19 situation, we are not certain when we will hold our presentation ceremony but will let the families know as soon as we are able. The judges had a tough job but did come up with the following results:"
